South Africa Universities & Colleges 0 v 70 Great Britain Community Lions
TUKS Stadium, Pretoria
Wednesday July 27 2010

The Great Britain Community Lions continued their South African tour with a comprehensive 70-0 demolition of the South African Students.

The Lions took just four minutes to open their account as a surging run from prop Scott Winstanley (Ince Rose Bridge) opened up the home defence and winger Chris Walker (Oulton Raiders) was on hand to touchdown.

Great Britain’s second try was not far behind as the influential Jordan Precious (Skirlaugh) created space for Gary Middlehurst (Leigh East) to race over and before the quarter hour mark had arrived a third effort from Mark Holmes (Oulton Raiders) had put the tourists well in command.

Further first half efforts from Walker and Middlehurst, plus a brace from forward Steve Atkinson (Skirlaugh) and goals from Precious meant the Lions were well in command at 32-0 at the break.

The second period continued in much the same fashion as the first with Great Britain on the front foot from start to finish.

Just eight minutes had gone before Matt Bowers (Skirlaugh) went over from 15 metres out and when centre Carl Redford (Leigh East) raced half the length of the field from the re-start the Lions were well on course for a huge win.

Two minutes later man of the match Paul Pendlebury (Wigan St Judes) was on the score sheet after a smart kick from Anthony Atherton and further efforts from Precious, Joe Budd (York Acorn), Winstanley (pictured) and David Dunwell (Normanton Knights) underlined the Lions dominance.

Coach Jimmy Taylor was pleased with his sides performance, especially with the test match against the South African Rhinos almost upon us.

“I was pleased with the way we went tonight and we can now plan for the test match,” said Taylor.

“We’re expecting a very physical game against the Rhinos and the players are under no illusion about the challenge they will face.”
