The victorious Yorkshire over 35’s squad with the Ravensport Trophy

Yorkshire Over 35’s won the inaugural BARLA Over 35’s County Championship at Leigh Sporting Village the home of Leigh East ARLFC defeating Lancashire and Cumbria in a round robin competition.

After training in their respective camps playing rugby union over the last few weeks, the Championship was used as a selections basis for the forthcoming BARLA Bulldogs attendance at the prestigious Dubai 7’s in December this year.

In the opening game Yorkshire overcame Lancashire 22-17 after leading 12-10 at the interval.

Mark Forster opened the scoring for Lancashire before Neil Collins and Steve Morton crossed the whitewash for Yorkshire with Mark Hewitt kicking a goal. Just on half time Peter Livett doubled Lancashire score to trail by two points at the break.

Johan Windley’s try gave Yorkshire a seven point buffer before a Joe Hart try and conversion by John McAtee levelled the game up at 17 all.

Windley then went over for his second score to secure victory for Yorkshire

Lancashire played Cumbria next and won the game 22-12 after having forged a 10-0 half time lead.

John McAtee and Jamie Bell scored two tries for Lancashire with both efforts being unconverted.

In the second half Dale Semple scored Cumbria’s opener before the ten point lead was restored after Karl Taylors try for Lancashire.

Andrew Little’s try and Steve Perry’s conversion cut the Lancashire lead back to three points but a Mark Forster try and Joe Hart goal ensured there was no way back for Cumbria.

Yorkshire went into the final game knowing that a draw against Cumbria would give them the title and duly obliged with a 12-5 win after being level at 5 all at half time.

Cumbria opened the scoring with a Steve Perry try before Mark Hewitt leveled the game up for Yorkshire.

Maurice Mayne scored the decisive try for Yorkshire with Neil Collins adding the extras to see the ‘White Rose’ county presented with Ravensport Trophy by BARLA Patron Maurice Oldroyd.
