The RFL publish findings of players’ survey

The RFL has published independent research company Vision TwentyOne’s report on the community game playing season consultation.

The full report, which can be downloaded from www.therfl.co.uk/thebigdebate, includes the detailed results of both the telephone survey of players and the community game wide online survey on what time of year the sport should be played.

Vision Twentyone conducted a telephone survey across 1,265 players over the age of 16 who play in winter leagues to ascertain their opinion on each of three options.

The headline results of this survey are as follows:

• The majority of players interviewed (56 per cent) agree with the introduction of a split season which would see a break for December, January and February. The remaining players either disagree (34 per cent) or neither agree nor disagree (10 per cent).

• The majority of respondents (58 per cent) agree with the introduction of a summer season. The remaining respondents either disagree (32 per cent) or neither agree nor disagree (10 per cent).

• Support for a winter season is more mixed; (41 per cent) of people agree, (42 per cent) of people disagree and (17 per cent) neither agree nor disagree.

Vision TwentyOne also administered an online survey which was open to anyone involved in the community game and was completed by 1,067 people

The headline results of this survey are as follows:

• The majority of respondents (53 per cent) disagree with the introduction of a split season. Around a third of respondents agree (36 per cent), and (11 per cent) neither agree nor disagree.

• The majority of respondents (57 per cent) agree with the introduction of a summer season. Around a third of respondents disagree (35 per cent), and less than one in 10 neither agree nor disagree (8 per cent).

• The majority of respondents (58 per cent) disagree with a winter season. Just under a third (28 per cent of respondents agree, and (15 per cent) neither agree nor disagree.

The Rugby League Community Board unanimously accepted the findings of this report at a meeting on July 1 and agreed that it indicated a clear desire to work towards a March-November season and structure for the bulk of the community game.

The Community Board also accepted that some leagues will continue to play during the winter months and that there are a number of detailed issues to work through.

These issues will be addressed as part of an ongoing consultation process and there will be a series of formal presentations to leagues and associations on the proposed structures over the next few months.

The Community Board will reconvene on July 16 to approve a timetable and action plan on how a March-November competition structure and framework could be implemented by 2012 at the earliest.
