New award produces next generation of officials
More than 300 Young Officials have successfully completed a new training award since it was launched in February 2010.
The Young Officials Award (YOA), which has been created by Adam Brown (Young Officials Development Officer), saw RFL appointed tutors deliver courses for 14 – 19 year olds at a total of 22 schools, colleges and universities.
Since completing the award, more than 60 of the newly trained referees and touch judges have officiated at Carnegie Champion Schools events.
The eight new tutors worked alongside the Regional Volunteer Officers to deliver the YOA as a bolt-on to the Rugby League Leaders Award.
Professional clubs including Castleford Tigers and Rochdale Hornets have also come on board and used the YOA to train officials to referee their own festivals such as the Tigers Trust Festival.
The YOA has now been delivered in five different countries, England, Ireland, Russia, Serbia and South Africa.
